What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of life forms on Earth - the richness of different species, their habitats and the genetic diversity within each species. Biodiversity includes all living organisms on Earth, their genetic variation and the different ecosystems they form. For example, a biodiverse forest has many different plant and animal species working together. Biodiversity is the basis for stable and functioning ecosystems, which in turn are necessary for all life on Earth.

Essential ecosystem services

Natural ecosystem services are essential for all life and also contribute to human quality of life and well-being. An ecosystem is the environment and all living things in an area of nature. Ecosystems are dependent on biodiversity, with each species playing a specific role in a unique cooperation.

A functioning ecosystem with biodiversity is a prerequisite for tackling the challenges linked to climate change and resource use, for example. By increasing knowledge about ecosystems and ecosystem services, we create greater understanding of the importance of protecting biodiversity.
