Ecogain has been commissioned by Green Power Sweden to produce a report showing how the solar and wind power industry can strengthen biodiversity. The results point to great opportunities - and show that many players are already well on their way.
- Renewable energy and nature restoration do not have to be in opposition to each other. On the contrary, solar and wind power can contribute to the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation and strengthen ecosystems in Sweden," says Tove Hägglund, Chief Biodiversity & Business Officer at Ecogain.
The report describes how land areas within solar and wind farms can be used to restore habitats through measures such as flowering buffer zones, sandy soil restoration, mowing and grazing. In this way, the industry can contribute to the climate transition both through renewable energy and by strengthening ecosystems.
This shows how solar and wind power can make an important contribution to the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, which requires at least 20% of the EU's land and freshwater areas to be restored by 2030. In Sweden, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's plan is due to be completed in February 2026. Ecogain is a consultative body in the process, as is the business network Business & Biodiversity Sweden.
