Shaping the next biodiversity roadmap with the aggregates industry

Gravel path through landscape

The Swedish Rock Materials Industry (SBMI) is taking an important initiative to strengthen biodiversity work in its sector. By developing an industry-wide roadmap, the organization wants to give the industry's future work with biodiversity a sustainable foundation. The project is supported by the Swedish Construction Industry Development Fund (SBUF) and Ecogain is proud to lead the assignment.

- "This roadmap is a strategic step towards a more nature-positive business. By integrating biodiversity throughout the value chain, we can create long-term sustainable business models in the aggregates industry," says Helena Granborg, Project Manager at Ecogain.

Working together for long-term impact

Several stakeholders in the aggregates industry have already started to promote biodiversity, including by taking into account species such as the barn swallow during the breeding season.

So why is a common roadmap needed? Companies in the same sector have many similar challenges and conditions. With a common roadmap, we get a lever in the work for biodiversity, with better conditions for scaling up and systematizing various efforts. Companies such as Swerock, NCC, Skanska and Svevia are involved in running the project together with SBMI.

Broad cooperation with key stakeholders

To ensure that the roadmap is well anchored, Ecogain collaborates with a broad reference group consisting of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, SLU Center for Biodiversity, WWF Sweden, the Swedish Transport Administration and Birdlife Sweden. The reference group contributes with important perspectives and helps to identify priority actions based on all aspects of biodiversity.

The project started in August 2024 and will run for one year. During this period, Ecogain and industry stakeholders will work closely together to embed the roadmap and ensure it becomes a useful tool for the whole industry.

This will be the second roadmap of its kind in Sweden. The first, Mining with Nature, was developed within the mining industry, also with the help of Ecogain experts.
