With the right rules, business can play a key role in achieving society's biodiversity goals. This is what Ecogain writes in its response to the government's proposed strategy for biodiversity and climate, and emphasizes the importance of a long-term approach and incentives for companies to dare to invest.
- For business, it is not just about setting targets, but also about making concrete investments in nature. This requires structures that give companies the courage to invest. With long-term and legally secure conditions, and concrete tools such as CLIMB to measure results and create confidence, we see that the willingness of the business community to invest increases," says Tove Hägglund, Chief Biodiversity & Business Director at Ecogain.
National coordinator and sector roadmaps
Ecogain welcomes the proposal for a national biodiversity coordinator and that the strategy highlights the need for sectoral roadmaps - something we have long experience of through the work of, among other things, the mining industry's Mining with Nature and ongoing work on SBMI's roadmap.
- "We have seen how sectoral roadmaps can be powerful tools to bring entire sectors together around common goals. This creates not only commitment but also direction for investment, research and innovation - and strengthens the competitiveness of sectors.
Among Ecogain's key recommendations are:
- Create clear and long-term incentives for companies to invest in biodiversity.
- Ensure that investments in nature protection and restoration are made where they create the most nature benefits.
- Creating the conditions for credible offset banking and biocredit schemes.
- Advocate CLIMB as a tool to measure and monitor biodiversity in a transparent way and create predictability in ecological compensation claims.
- "CLIMB provides companies and authorities with a common basis for comparing current status and impacts on biodiversity - both positive and negative," says Tove Hägglund. "It makes it easier to follow up on investments and build trust with both customers and investors.
At Ecogain, we look forward to continuing to contribute our expertise and experience to realizing the strategy - and helping more businesses become part of the biodiversity solution.
