Derome, one of Sweden's leading timber companies, has always had sustainability at the heart of its business. But with the new EU requirements, they needed to deepen their work on biodiversity and ecosystems and enlisted the help of Ecogain.
Derome, one of Sweden's largest family-owned wood industries, has long been a pioneer in sustainable construction and forest management. With over 70 years of experience in the industry, Derome is a reliable player offering everything from raw materials to finished homes. Their commitment to the environment and sustainable development is well known, and they constantly strive to minimize their impact on nature.
As new sustainability regulations come into force, in this case, the EUCSRD and ESRS, companies are faced with increased requirements to analyze and report their impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems. For Derome, with deep roots in the forest industry, it was of utmost importance to not only understand these requirements but also integrate them into its business processes. The challenge was to conduct a double materiality analysis, where both the impact on and dependence on biodiversity would be mapped and assessed.
We were entrusted to support Derome in this complex work and together we started with a training for business area managers within the company. The training focused on the business relevance of biodiversity and ecosystems, combining our expertise in strategy and reporting linked to CSRD/ESRS with the deep knowledge of our PhD ecologists.
We then entered a practical phase where the work was carried out in collaborative meetings with the different business areas within Derome. This hands-on work allowed us to jointly identify and assess material impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities in a way that is uniquely tailored to Derome's business.
Strengthened position thanks to the collaboration
Through the collaboration, Derome now has a robust double materiality analysis that not only meets the new legal requirements, but also strengthens their position as a leading player in sustainability work in the construction and forestry industry.
Ecogain has been a very valuable partner in our dual materiality analysis linked to biodiversity and ecosystems. support has helped us identify and assess impacts, risks and opportunities, which has provided us with valuable insights and will strengthen our sustainability work and reporting in the area.
