When construction giant Peab took the step to deepen its work on biodiversity and sustainable development, it turned to Ecogain for expertise and guidance. Working closely together, Peab has now strengthened its efforts to mainstream biodiversity throughout its operations while meeting increased reporting requirements.
Peab, one of the largest construction companies in the Nordic region, has long worked with sustainability issues as part of its business strategy. However, as biodiversity and ecosystem reporting requirements increased in the EU, it realized that a more structured and comprehensive approach was needed to meet the new expectations. Peab therefore turned to us at Ecogain, who have extensive experience in supporting companies with similar challenges.
Current situation analysis of Peab's business areas
We chose to start the collaboration with Peab with a baseline analysis of the company's impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities, using TNFD's LEAP methodology to support the analysis process. Ecogain's experts in strategy, sustainability reporting, ecology and geographic information management (GIS) contributed to the thorough analysis of the company's business areas, which was also an important parameter in the subsequent work on PEAB's double materiality analysis.
In addition to an analysis of the current situation, we also conducted a gap analysis against ESRS E4's reporting requirements to provide a basis for recommendations going forward. The proposals are linked to Peab's overall strategy, guidelines, goals, measures and follow-up - both at company level and per business area.
Anchoring and transparency have permeated the project
The work has been anchored in the organization through interviews, discussions and workshops with employees. Opportunities and measures to focus on in the future have also been crystallized and formulated. Measures linked to both the upstream value chain (purchased materials) and direct operations were developed. A prerequisite for creating a really good and relevant action plan was that Ecogain's expertise in nature-based solutions contributed with experience and input on effective solutions to promote biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Ecogain's expertise and guidance has been a valuable support for us in integrating biodiversity into our sustainability strategies. It has given us a stronger foundation to face future challenges.
Elisabet Stadler, Head of Group Environment
By combining our deep knowledge of environmental sustainability and strategic reporting, we were able to help Peab not only understand the new rules but also put them into practice. With Ecogain's support, Peab now has a plan for its biodiversity work that not only meets the new EU regulations, but also helps our planet and contributes to long-term, sustainable growth for the company.
