Areim is taking the next step in integrating biodiversity into real estate development and management. In collaboration with Ecogain, the real estate company has developed a new guide and a pilot project is now underway in Stockholm.
Biodiversity has become an increasingly important issue for the real estate industry, with legislators and investors alike demanding the preservation and enhancement of natural values in buildings and facilities. When Areim approached Ecogain, the goal was clear - to not only map and plan for biodiversity, but also to implement concrete measures that would have a lasting impact.
Striving to increase biodiversity in Areim's real estate portfolio
The collaboration resulted in a guide to promote biodiversity in real estate management and development. Areim's ambition is to achieve increased biodiversity on its properties through long-term efforts, thereby actively contributing to a more sustainable real estate industry. The guide is available on the Areim website.
Guide to promoting biodiversity
The guide marks a next step for Areim's structured work to preserve and enhance biodiversity within the company's property portfolio. The focus is on areas where interventions have the greatest impact on biodiversity and where synergies can be created with climate adaptation and social well-being.
Designed for planning, execution and management, the guide supports Areim staff in integrating biodiversity concerns throughout the business process, from due diligence to property sales.

Pilot project at Grönstedtska Palatset in Stockholm
In parallel with the development of the guide, a first pilot project has been initiated for the Grönstedtska Palatset property in Stockholm. The pilot project aims to apply the guide's guidelines and provide site-specific and practically feasible action proposals for Grönstedtska Palatset.
Proposed measures include the creation of new native plantings and the installation of nesting boxes for swifts and house martins.
Focus on communication and embedding
An important aspect of Areim's work is to ensure that biodiversity information is clearly communicated, both internally and to tenants and future property owners.
To make the biodiversity work process easy to navigate and accessible, the guide has been developed with clear guidelines and references.
A series of workshops with Ecogain will further strengthen the anchoring, with the aim of introducing employees to the work process to create participation in the further development of the guide.
