In connection with the extensive work on the Norrbotniabanan, the Swedish Transport Administration, together with Ecogain, Boliden, Umeå University and Sami villages in the area, has now developed a system to prevent wildlife accidents involving reindeer. The social costs of wildlife accidents in Sweden amount to SEK 3-4 billion per year.
Motion-activated sound is used to deter reindeer from crossing roads and thus avoid a dangerous situation. The project has initially gotten off to a great start, with the system deterring reindeer in as many as 60% of cases. A promising first result to significantly reduce traffic accidents and economic losses for both the Sami villages and the whole community.
