Through a pioneering collaboration between Ragn-Sells, SCA Obbola and Ecogain, the industrial landfill in Obbola is becoming one with nature through ecological restoration. From industrial landfill to nature area with animals and plants that fit the other nature along the Ume River delta.
A year and a half ago, Ecogain's ecologists started to develop a plan for the ecological restoration of the Obbola landfill, together with Ragn-Sells and SCA Obbola. The plan for ecological and social added value also includes making the Obbola landfill part of a larger recreational area.
- "This project is the first of its kind, which makes it incredibly exciting. SCA and Ragn-Sells are working hard to ensure that the landfill reaches its full potential as a resource for both biodiversity and people," says Tove Hägglund, Ecogain's project manager for the assignment.
Contributed valuable species knowledge
Designing new nature on an industrial landfill is a complex process.
- When it comes to the actual restoration of nature, it is very important to get it right and we have received invaluable help from Ecogain and SCA Skog to determine which species should be present and how the restoration work should be done," says Marcus Åberg, Market Area Manager at Ragn-Sells in Umeå.
