With knowledge of how birds use your land, we at Ecogain find solutions that benefit both your business and a rich bird life. Our bird experts are now starting to plan for next year's bird season - and switching on new technologies that deliver reliable results.
Inventory using drones
With the help of drones, we have inventoried golden eagle nests during the summer on behalf of Svevind. Previously, similar surveys have been carried out from the ground with less certainty and more time. It is clear that the new technology brings many advantages.
- The drone makes it much easier to see the condition of the nest and whether there is a chick in the nest," says Antoine Bos, one of our bird experts.
The technology can facilitate the inventory of barn owls and bird colonies, and can reduce the risk of disturbing the birds.
- In my experience, the birds don't seem to mind the drone. It is rather we humans who risk disturbing them with our presence, which means that drone technology brings additional benefits," Antoine continues.
Things to consider for smooth permitting processes and a rich bird life
Meeting conditions in permit processes and conducting species protection surveys are crucial elements for smooth processes and sustainable schedules. Do you want to create good conditions for correctly conducted bird surveys and a relevant basis in your processes? Here we have gathered some thoughts that can be useful to include in the planning.
- Plan your bird surveys well in advance.
This will give you a good chance of staying on schedule. Many birds and areas can only be surveyed during certain parts of the year, and now may be a good time to start planning for next year. - Create the conditions for a safe delivery.
Make sure that your delivery is not person-dependent and that those you hire have the ability to translate the inventory results into an easily understandable and useful basis. - Hire skilled and experienced contractors.
In addition to a good knowledge of birds, require a good knowledge of the Species Protection Regulation and preferably also of experience with environmental assessments, court hearings and control programs. This will support you throughout the process, especially in complex cases. - Use consultants with knowledge of the local area and with the confidence of the local nature conservation community. It will give you a smoother process.
