Tetra Pak and Biodiversify have a long-term partnership on nature issues and have jointly developed the Tetra Pak Approach for Nature - a nature strategy with targets for the whole business. As part of this, in 2024/25, nature inventories and action plans were carried out at two pilot sites, and the results formed the basis of a template format and guidance that is now being rolled out globally.
The site in Lund, Sweden, was chosen as a pilot site. It is a key facility in Tetra Pak's global operations, bringing together offices, production and development. It is located in southern Lund, surrounded by housing, an old railway, a highway - and less than a kilometer from both a Natura 2000 site and a nature reserve. This makes the site particularly important from a nature perspective.
Simple actions that make a big difference for biodiversity
To understand the nature values on and around the site and assess the impact on biodiversity, Biodiversify collaborated with Ecogain. We conducted a nature value inventory with site assessment and identified ecosystems such as grasslands, older deciduous trees and ruderal environments, as well as various impact factors and opportunities for nature improvements. Among other things, we were able to suggest measures such as keeping gravel and sand surfaces in pristine condition and reducing artificial lighting to benefit nocturnal species.
With this in mind, Biodiversify developed a Biodiversity Action Plan - a living document with goals, targets and indicators to guide the site in becoming more nature-friendly.
The experience contributes to Tetra Pak's overall goals
The project in Lund contributes to Tetra Pak's overall goal that all production sites should have their own nature plans. It both strengthens internal commitment and serves as a practical example of how nature can be integrated into daily operations. The experience gained in Lund and Monte Mor, the other pilot site located in Brazil, will be used in future work.
"Biodiversify and Ecogain have been valuable partners in driving our biodiversity work forward. Biodiversify provided strategic guidance and a high level of professionalism, while Ecogain provided invaluable local expertise. Together they have shaped our approach and delivered high quality results."
- Guilherme Camargo, Nature Manager, Tetra Pak
Biodiversify highlights the importance of collaborating with local experts, as biodiversity is site-dependent. Ecogain's knowledge of Swedish standards and regional priorities made it possible to develop relevant and effective recommendations that strengthen both the site and the nature around it.
