Ecogain Biodiversity Index 2022 - US 100 largest companies ranked

With five of the world's 10 most profitable companies located in the United States, it is considered one of the most economically influential countries in the world. Now, the 100 largest US companies' reporting is reviewed and ranked by the Ecogain Biodiversity Index.

Launched in 2019, the Ecogain Biodiversity Index (EBI) ranks the biodiversity commitments and activities of the largest companies, based on their annual reports. On November 16, 2022, the first review of the 100 largest companies in the United States was released. The top-ranked companies include Philip Morris International Dow, Target, Lowe's and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). Phillip Morris International scores 23 points, on par with the highest ranked European company, Vattenfall.

Among the eight companies with the highest scores, six different sectors are represented: consumer goods, durable goods and services, materials, finance, healthcare and information technology. This shows that there are biodiversity pioneers in a wide range of industries.

The EBI ranking shows that 9% of the US companies analyzed have reported time-bound, measurable and relevant biodiversity targets. In total, 20% of companies have reported some form of biodiversity target, including the 9% mentioned above. At the same time, the ranking shows that as many as 41% do not mention biodiversity. This indicates that risks related to biodiversity loss remain an unknown issue for many companies.

Currently, there is no regulatory framework for sustainability reporting in the US; reporting is voluntary.
