A woodcock inventory carried out by Ecogain's bird experts will give you a clear picture of where the species are and what consideration is required in the permitting process.
How a woodcock inventory works
The wood grouse inventory is planned for the most intense spring breeding season during a few weeks in April-May, when capercaillie and black grouse are most active and easy to observe. Our experts will start with map studies and data from the Species Portal to identify areas of potential occurrence, and then combine this with field visits to locate breeding sites.
In the field, we look for signs such as droppings and other indicators, and visit the most interesting areas in the mornings (grouse) and evenings (capercaillie) to determine the number of roosters. All observations are documented in GIS with time, location and circumstances of the findings. The result is a clear picture of the species' presence and the area's suitability as a habitat - and a reliable basis for the permitting process.
Benefits of a grouse inventory
The inventory reduces the risk of late surprises and allows for better planning.
- Early identification of capercaillie and black grouse leks.
- Systematic field method and accurate GIS documentation.
- Supporting documents for assessment and consultation.
- Lower risk of completion requirements and delays.
