All good things come in threes - Ecogain creates multi-level benefits in a major wetland restoration project.
We are sequestering carbon, increasing groundwater recharge and promoting biodiversity, all in the same mission," says project manager Andreas Karlberg enthusiastically.
We have been commissioned to restore the hydrology in several protected areas during the fall and our experienced limnologist consultants Andreas Karlberg, Ursula Zinko and Anders Granér are all involved in the project.
The wetland initiative is initiated by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, which wants county administrative boards, municipalities and other local actors to create new wetlands or restore drained wetlands.
Improving wetlands in seven nature reserves
In Västernorrland County, we are project managing work in seven nature reserves on behalf of the County Administrative Board. We mainly work on creating ditch plugs and closing ditches to slow down the water moving through the landscape. In some places we also biotope cleaned watercourses.
We are returning rocks and other material removed during rafting, allowing these lakes and rivers to collect more water.
Leading the work in Hamra National Park
In Hamra National Park, we are carrying out a wetland restoration planned by the County Administrative Board of Gävleborg. Here, too, we are mainly working on constructing ditch plugs that slow down the water flowing through the landscape. The ditch plugs consist of peat or peat in combination with logs, and skilled machine operators carry out the work.
